15 Unusual Travel Essentials – That Aren’t on the Basic Lists

travel essentials you didn’t know you needed.

Let’s be honest—every travel checklist tells you to bring a neck pillow, noise-canceling headphones, and a power bank. And while those are great, what about the not-so-obvious items? The unusual travel essentials? The kind you only think of after you’ve landed and said, “Ugh, I wish I had packed that!”

After years of road trips, wine weekends, and budget travel adventures (with my fair share of unexpected hiccups), I’ve learned that a few unconventional items can make your travel smoother, lighter, and way less stressful.

So here it is—my list of 15 unusual travel essentials that have saved the day more times than I can count. Add these to your packing list and thank me later.

These unusual travel essentials are perfect for New York at Christmas Time, whether you’re ice-skating at Bryant Park or exploring holiday markets.

1. Ziploc Bags (Multiple Sizes)

They’re the Swiss Army knife of travel. Use them for snacks, toiletries, cords, wet swimsuits, or to quarantine a smelly sock until laundry day. Grab the multiple size big box at Costco and bring several of each; quart, gallon, even sandwich size.

2. Disposable Laundry Bag or Dry Bag

Great for separating dirty clothes—or use it with detergent to hand-wash essentials in a hotel sink.

3. Rubber Bands & Zip Ties

Tiny, but seriously helpful for organizing cables, fixing zippers, or holding things together on the go. My husband had to help a colleague fix her luggage wheel and this came in handy! Pick these up at your local store.

4. Laundry Detergent Sheets

TSA-friendly, light, and easy. Just toss one in the sink or tub and you’ve got clean clothes in no time.
📎 Earth Breeze Eco Friendly Travel Sheets

5. S-Shaped Hook

Perfect for awkward bathrooms with nowhere to hang things—great for hostels, Airbnbs, or campsite showers.
📎 30-Pack Steel Hooks

6. Door Stopper

Peace of mind for solo travelers. Pop it under your hotel door for an extra layer of security while you sleep.
📎 2-Pack with Alarm

7. Pashmina or Large Scarf

Doubles as a shawl, picnic blanket, or makeshift pillow. Adds both warmth and style.
📎 Cashmere Feel & Multiple Colors

8. Reusable Shopping Bag

Folds into almost nothing and works for groceries, beach days, or hauling train snacks. Just grab the one in the back of your car! You know, the bag that is buried and you forget to take into the grocery store all the time!

9. Moleskin for Blisters

Don’t wait for the blister—put it on the second you feel friction or even before to break in new shoes. Your feet will thank you. I love the rolls because you can cut off the shape and size that you need. Also, did you know you can use moleskin to fix an underwire from your bra that has poked through the fabric?

10. Soft Silicone Earplugs

Comfortable and effective. Great for hotels, flights, or just tuning out the world for a while. Listen, I cannot stress this enough, buy these and bring them! I used to laugh at my husband for wearing them, but when you are trying to sleep and your hotel is next to a busy street corner or loud kids, you will thank me.
📎 Quiet Loop Earplugs

11. Camping Spork

Because sometimes you get takeout with no utensils. Lightweight and endlessly useful. I would have found this very helpful when on an early morning train with a yogurt from the local food stand and no spoon!

12. Empty Pillowcase (Travel Hack!)

Stuff it with clothes and boom—a cozy travel pillow. Packs tiny when not in use. What’s great about this is that it gives you an extra carry-on without being counted as one. Pack your extra pair of underwear, swim suit, and a change of clothes in it and save more space in that carry-on for your medicines and toiletries.

13. AirFly Bluetooth Adapter

No more wired headphones for in-flight entertainment. This lets you use your AirPods with airplane screens.

14. Mini Sewing Kit with Safety Pins

Tiny emergencies are inevitable. A needle, thread, and a few pins can save your outfit. You can pick these up at your local store. Fiskars has a mini one for less than $8.

15. Baby Wipes

Great for a quick refresh, cleaning sticky hands, or wiping down airplane trays and hotel remotes. I always grab a mini pack at the store in the travel aisle. I use it to wipe down everything. Nothing worse than setting your hand down on a tray and it comes back sticky! UGH. No one wants that.

Bonus Item: Travel Corkscrew

As an avid wine lover and enthusiast, I never leave home without a compact travel corkscrew. While many vacation rentals may have one, good lucking finding it! And if you are in a hotel, well, it won’t be there for that bottle you found and brought to the room for later.
