Have you ever wondered how to plan a vacation for a wine tour with friends?

Life at 50 is about embracing the joy of experiences, and for me, that means travel, wine, and making beautiful memories with friends. As an empty nester and grandma of two boys, I’m all about finding new ways to celebrate life—whether it’s a weekend of wine tasting, a scenic vineyard picnic, or a perfectly paired dinner under the stars.

And let’s be real—I’m a planner at heart! I love researching the best places to go, building itineraries, and making every trip effortless and memorable. But I know not everyone enjoys the planning part as much as I do. That’s why I created this guide—to help you plan the perfect wine getaway without the stress. You deserve to sip, savor, and simply enjoy.

First, why do people visit wineries? In addition to spending time with friends, it’s a great opportunity to learn all about how the fruit gets to the bottle, the harvest and crush process, fermenting, and aging. It’s a fascinating journey! If you wonder what questions you should ask on a winery tour/tasting visit, ask things like if they age their wine on oak or stainless steel, what percent of their wine they don’t sell in a year, or when they do harvest and crush. Tip! Many wineries have special events during crush season where you can go and see and even participate.

The right destination sets the tone for your trip—do you want a relaxed beachside tasting, a rustic vineyard escape, or an immersive food and wine pairing experience? We ran out of time to get to the Douro Valley (next time for sure), but did get to taste some amazing wines. Off-Season (November–March): Enjoy fewer crowds, lower prices, and more personalized tastings.
Spring & Summer (April–July): Ideal for vineyard picnics, wine festivals, and lush vineyard views. It’s also often time for Spring Barrel where many wineries roll out their latest wines for the year. We love going to Prosser, WA for their spring festival in April. But book your hotels and reservations early because it gets very busy!

Hiring a Driver: Ideal for stress-free tastings, and it eliminates the need to worry about navigating after drinking. A driver can take you from winery to winery, ensuring a safe and relaxing experience.

9. My Favorite Wine Destinations to Visit

Lake Chelan, Washington: My all-time favorite weekend wine escape! Close to the charming Bavarian town of Leavenworth, this region boasts amazing wineries. Standouts include Siren Song, Tipsy Canyon, Lake Chelan Winery (free tastings!), and Hard Row to Hoe. I’m working on a full Lake Chelan itinerary, so stay tuned for that!
Willamette Valley, Oregon: Known for its world-class Pinot Noir, the Willamette Valley in Oregon is a must-visit for wine enthusiasts. The valley offers scenic vineyards, intimate tasting rooms, and a vibrant wine culture.
