Day 1: Discover Auckland’s Skyline, Beaches & Landmarks
Morning:
- Start your day with a drive or walk along the waterfront. Auckland’s skyline is iconic, and the views from the Sky Tower are stunning if you want a panoramic city perspective.
- Visit Rangitoto Island, known as the “Tears of Blood” for its volcanic landscape. It’s a short ferry ride and perfect for hiking and photography. Hiking here is a must for panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf.
Afternoon:
- Stop at Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, a great mix of history and city views.
- Walk along Mission Bay for a relaxed afternoon, take in the beach, and enjoy local cafés.
Dinner:
- We dined at The Mission Bay Tap Room, where they serve excellent beer and plum cider. A relaxed atmosphere makes it perfect after a day exploring.
Pro tip: Downtown parking can be tricky—consider staying in a central hotel, like we did, so you can walk to the ferry and avoid traffic hassles.
Day 2: Waiheke Island Wine Adventure
No trip to Auckland, NZ is complete without a visit to nearby Waiheke Island. Just a 35–40 minute ferry ride from downtown, the island is a haven for wine lovers. We took the hop-on hop-off bus to explore over 30 vineyards in one day. Personal favorites included Wild Estate, Stonyridge, The Batch, and Mudbrick Vineyards.
- Catch the ferry from downtown Auckland to Waiheke Island (~35–40 minutes).
- Hop-on hop-off bus is the best way to explore the island’s 30+ vineyards without worrying about driving.
- Must-visit wineries: Wild Estate, Stonyridge, The Batch, Mudbrick Vineyards.
- For more details, see my full Waiheke Island Wine Walk guide.
Tips from Other Travelers:
- Book ferry and bus tickets in advance, especially during weekends.
- Take photos from the upper deck of the ferry—it’s the best view of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.
Dining:
- Many wineries have restaurants; for casual bites, Oneroa Village is perfect for lunch or snacks.

Day 3: Coromandel Peninsula & Hot Water Beach
We rented a car and drove to the Coromandel Peninsula for one of the most unique experiences of our trip: Hot Water Beach. Arriving around low tide (ours was 3:58 PM), we rented a spade and dug our own personal hot tubs in the volcanic sand. The water backfilled at the perfect temperature—sometimes too hot—making it an unforgettable adventure. I recommend staying at the Hot Water Beach Holiday Park and booking a villa.
Later, we walked to Cathedral Cove, a 1.5-mile trek down to turquoise waters and breathtaking rock formations. Watching the sunset from the cove was one of my favorite moments of the entire trip.
Afternoon:
- Bring swimwear, a spade (you can rent on-site), and be ready to dig your own natural hot tub in volcanic sand.
- Watch out—the beach gets busy; choose an open spot early.
- Water can be extremely hot—jump in carefully or check out others’ pools if you prefer not to dig.
Evening or Morning (depending on low-tide at Hot Water Beach):
- Relax at your private villa with a glass of wine.
- Walk down to Cathedral Cove (1.5 miles each way) for incredible rock formations and turquoise waters.
Pro Tips:
- Bring water shoes—they make walking on rocky or hot sand much easier.
- Sunscreen is essential, even late afternoon.

Day 4: Rotorua & Hobbiton Movie Set
We stayed in Rotorua as our home base for the last few days. There are many hotels down there. Driving to Rotorua, we explored geothermal landscapes and Maori culture before heading to Hobbiton Movie Set. The tour was magical—though the Hobbit doors don’t lead anywhere, the gardens, Shire homes, and the Green Dragon Pub make it feel like stepping into the movie.
Hobbiton Tour:
- Pre-book tickets for the Hobbiton Movie Set.
- Highlights: picturesque Shire homes (doors don’t lead inside—rooms filmed separately), gardens, and the Green Dragon Pub for a complimentary beer.
- Plan for extra travel time; Hobbiton is about 2 hours from Rotorua.
Afternoon/Evening:
- Free time in Rotorua or explore local markets, lakes, and geothermal areas.
Pro Tips:
Bring a light jacket; Rotorua can be windy. Wear comfortable walking shoes for Hobbiton—it’s mostly outdoor paths.

Day 5: Adventure Day in Rotorua
For thrill-seekers, the Kaituna River rafting experience is unforgettable. The 21-foot waterfall and class five rapids are not for the faint of heart—I’ll admit, I was terrified—but it’s an incredible adventure if you love adrenaline.
Later, we rode the Skyline Rotorua gondola and luge, which is fun for all skill levels, followed by a nighttime stroll on the Redwood Treewalk, beautifully lit and magical under the stars. We finished the evening with a visit to a Maori village, enjoying cultural performances and traditional hangi cuisine.
Morning:
- Kaituna River Rafting (class 5, 21-foot waterfall)—for adrenaline seekers.
- Safety first: life jackets and helmets provided. Be prepared to get soaked!
Afternoon:
- Head to Skyline Rotorua for the gondola and luge rides. Several runs allowed—perfect for families or couples.
Evening:
- Walk the Redwood Treewalk at night to see starry-lit pathways.
- Optional: visit a Maori village for evening cultural performances and a hangi dinner.
Pro tip: River rafting is intense—only for confident swimmers. One woman fell out of our boat and another man had his finger broke. It is not for the faint of heart. Luge and the tree walk are safer options for those seeking milder adventure.

Day 6: Relaxation & Departure
Morning:
- Enjoy some hokey pokey ice cream (a Kiwi favorite).
- Take a geothermal bath or spa facial at your hotel.
Afternoon:
- Visit The Locker village for shopping, dancing, or last-minute souvenirs.
- Head back to Auckland and consider booking a hotel by the airport before your flight the next day.
Pro Tips:
- Auckland Airport is about 30 minutes from downtown; plan for traffic when scheduling flights.
- Currency: New Zealand Dollar (NZD), most places accept cards.
